I am a fully qualified and UKCP accredited family and systemic psychotherapist, supervisor and trainer. I work with children, young people and families in the NHS 4 days a week. My independent practice is based at the River Clinic, where I see currently see families, young people, individuals and couples on Wednesdays.

I aim to create a warm and safe context for people experiencing difficulties and those important in their lives to express their feelings, experiences and perspectives, to understand each other better, build on their skills and strengths and find ways forward in their lives. I specialise in working with children and young people and their families, ‘adult’ family groups and with couples experiencing tough times.

I aim to work collaboratively with my clients, shaping my practice according to their preferences and needs. Working with family members together can be helpful when a family is experiencing difficulties. It may also be important for family members to be seen individually. Some clients like to talk, some prefer creative ways of expressing and exploring feelings and experiences when words seem inadequate or hard to find. In my work with children and young people, I often use ‘seriously playful’ art and play approaches.

I train other professionals in family therapy and am a visiting lecturer at the Institute of Family Therapy, London. I have published widely in the UK and Europe on relational well-being and creative Family Therapy practice with children, young people and families. As well as articles in professional journals and in The Times, The Guardian, The Independent and more, I’ve co-written two books on parent-child and sibling relationships – Raising Happy Children (co-author with Jan Stimpson) Hodder & Stoughton, and Raising Happy Brothers and Sisters (co-author with Jan Stimpson) Hodder & Stoughton (The Independent’s ‘parenting book of the year’ 2002). Both books are recommended by Family and Parenting Institute, NSPCC, Young Minds etc.
