ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE

KORINA BIGGS
BScEcon MSTAT

Korina BiggsThe Alexander Technique helps you change the way you think and respond to your environment and restores balance in the way you use yourself. It is a simple and practical method which helps you to move and use your mind and body with freedom and ease.

What conditions can it help?

  • Back and neck pain
  • Knee/hip or joint problems such as arthritis
  • Conditions such as RSI (repetitive strain injury)
  • Asthma/breathing problems
  • Stress or the inability to relax
  • Performance / co-ordination skills

The Technique will help to free you of back/neck pain and general muscle tension and will improve your sense of well-being and your quality of life. At work the Technique can help you to relax, manage your time and energy and stay calm in a crisis. Those who work at computers will learn to sit in a more effective way and avoid RSI. Performing artists and sportspeople find it helpful for breathing, voice production, balance and co-ordination. It improves stamina and reduces "stage fright". After operations, illness or injury, the Technique aids rehabilitation. Mothers find the Technique helpful during pregnancy, childbirth and managing their posture when caring for their baby.

Bowen Technique is a manual therapy involving very gentle movements of the therapists hands and fingers over muscles, ligaments and tendons where there is injury or pain. This  stimulates sensory nerve endings at the sites of injury to relay information back to the central nervous system which in turn sends appropriate messages back to correct and adjust the tensions at the injury site, thus speeding recovery and reducing pain.
Bowen Technique is suitable for all ages including babies and the elderly.

COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY

TRACY FULLER
UKEAPC accredited, MBACP
sandra chitty

I am an accredited psychotherapeutic counsellor and trainer. I have over ten years of experience of counselling adults, children and young people. I am an accredited practitioner with UK and European Association of Psychotherapeutic Counsellors UKEAPC and a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy BACP.

I aim to create a safe and respectful therapeutic relationship where difficult feelings can be held and managed successfully. Whatever you need support with, together will we find your strengths, explore your options to feel more whole or help you to move forward. My approach is relational; combining humanistic core values with psychodynamic thinking about the influence of early relationships. I emphasise the value of a trusting therapeutic relationship in promoting personal growth and empowerment. I offer a safe and confidential space to explore your feelings with somebody who will not judge you. I believe that our experiences in childhood influence how we feel about ourselves in relating to others now. In exploring this, you can move towards feeling more confident and develop your vitality in the ‘here and now’, rather than being bound by your past.

Creative arts: Sometimes words are not enough therefore I also offer an arts-based approach for those clients who want to work in this way. By representing our feelings symbolically using images we can explore areas that we may not feel able to talk about. This can maximise the possibility of change and healing.

Child and Adolescent Counselling: I also offer a specialist service working with children and young people. I have many years of experience of working therapeutically with children including working for the NSPCC and working as a Schools Counsellor in primary and secondary schools. Children naturally use stories, symbols and play to express their thoughts and concerns. For children and young people I offer a play or arts based approach using sand tray work with miniature figures and animals, clay, paint as well puppets and mask making. I aim to create a safe space to help children express and make sense of difficult or powerful feelings that may be troubling them or causing them to feel isolated or stuck.

My qualifications include an Advanced Diploma in Counselling (1999), a Masters in Psychotherapeutic Counselling (2005) and an Intermediate Certificate in Therapeutic Group Work skills (2007). I also train others to be psychotherapeutic counsellors at the Faculty of Education, Cambridge University.

Fees:
£30-£40 per appointment. Initial session is half price.

CAROLINE WHITTICASE
Dip. C

Counselling offers a safe place, separate from your daily life, where you can explore issues or feelings which are causing you difficulty.

What issues do people bring to counselling?
Anything and everything!
You may have difficult thoughts, feelings or behaviour to deal with (your own or others), or may want to discuss responses to recent or past events and experiences. Whatever the issue, counselling is increasingly shown to be of lasting benefit. You don't have to feel you've reached crisis point before seeking help.

What sorts of areas can be helped by counselling?

• Relationship, family or personal issues
• Loss, including separation, bereavement or redundancy
• The trauma of abuse
• Low self esteem or confidence
• Stress related ill health, depression or anxiety
• Inner conflict
• Addiction problems & eating disorders
• Self-development & personal insight

Caroline's Approach to Counselling
Caroline works with individuals, couples and families, for long-term and short-term work. As an Integrated Counsellor, Caroline often encompasses several different strands of therapy according to the needs of the client and to the nature of the issue.

As a counsellor Caroline will not usually offer advice (as such) but will aim to work with you to provide an opportunity to explore and understand issues which are impacting negatively on your life. Caroline believes that the answers lie within us all. Through counselling Caroline can help you find your own solutions that will empower you to move forward with greater understanding of the person you are and the person you would like to be.

Caroline holds professional indemnity insurance and she attends regular clinical supervision sessions. Her practice follows the codes and ethics as laid down by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Fees
Caroline always offers an initial consultation free of charge.
Any subsequent sessions are charged at £37.50 per hour for an individual or £40.00 for couples.

HOMEOPATHY

SARAH PLUMB

LCHE, RSHom

Sarah completed a 4 year training course at the Centre for Homeopathic Education in London. She is a registered member of The Society of Homeopaths and abides by their Code of Ethics and Practice. She practices in Brighton and Lewes.

Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a complete system of medicine that works alone or alongside conventional treatment. It is a gentle and effective form of healthcare which is suitable for your whole family regardless of their age. It is safe to use during pregnancy and labour, for babies and the elderly.

Homeopathy uses a holistic approach, taking into account all aspects of the individual. During a homeopathic consultation equal importance is given to your mental, emotional and physical symptoms. Homeopaths recognise that symptoms of illness are the body’s attempt to heal itself and we use these symptoms as clues to find the most appropriate remedy for you. The remedy chosen is based on the law of similars - “treating like with like”. Homeopathic remedies work by stimulating your body’s own natural healing process.

Homeopathy can help individuals overcome a wide range of physical, mental and emotional problems whether they are acute or chronic conditions. Some examples are shown below. If you would like to know how homeopathy can help you please feel free to contact me.

LYNNE RUSSELL

BSc FSDSHom MARH
Lynne Russell
Chantry Homeopathy

I am an experienced professional homeopath with practices in Lewes, Storrington and Billingshurst. I treat adults and children with a wide range of conditions and have a special interest in working with people through challenging times in their lives.

Transition
There can be many times when we feel as if we are being challenged. Often these periods of transition are born of crisis such as a change in our health, at home or work. This can often offer us great potential for personal growth and happiness. This personal process potentially mirroring the transitions we hope to see within society.

I enjoy working with people at these stages in their lives. Homeopathy truly is a medicine of transition, able to respond to and embrace change, supporting us through the twists and turns of our paths. The safe, reflective space offered allows us not only to work with remedies, but also to become more aware of, and explore the connections that are unfolding in our lives.

Natural Alternatives at the Menopause
Menopause is one such transition and it can be a time of great change for women. Although a natural process it can bring with it a range of troublesome and difficult symptoms as well as emotional challenges. I specialise in helping women at this time in their lives using individually tailored remedies and dietary advice as support during this period of transition. I offer help if you are on HRT and need to stop, if you cannot take HRT because of your medical history, or if you simply wish to use natural alternatives at the menopause.

Homeopathy may help to alleviate some of the symptoms women can experience such as hot flushes, night sweats, sleeping difficulties, mood swings, painful joints, etc. You may wish to find out more about how to protect yourself against the worry of osteoporosis. Whatever stage of the menopause you are in, using remedies and dietary measures as support may not only help you during the menopause itself, but could also help improve overall health now and for the years to come.

The menopause can also prove to be a challenging time for women emotionally, often compounded by and resulting in other changes at work and at home. Homeopathy can offer support and help women to embrace this female milestone as an opportunity for change and contentment.

Please visit my website at  www.chantryhealth.com or phone if you would like to arrange a free 15 minute phone or mini-consultation to discuss whether I might be able to help.

I look forward to hearing from you
Lynne

HYDROTHERM MASSAGE

RICK STONE

Rick has been a massage therapist for over 10 years.  For the last 7 years he has been specialising in Hydrotherm massage and is part of the National Training Team.  Rick has worked with some of the top Physiotherapists in the country and helped introduce Hydrotherm massage into the National spinal unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

Hydrotherm massage differs from other types of massage because the treatment is carried out whilst the client is lying face up on warm water filled cushions.  Rick uses oil and works between the clients back and the water cushion, which allows pressure to be upwards rather than downwards.  As the body is on warm water the muscles are relaxed and there is less resistance which means a very deep massage without the pain.

Hydrotherm is an ideal treatment for all ages and can be used to help many medical conditions, muscle strains, postural correction and relaxation.  It is also perfect for all stages of pregnancy.

To book a treatment or for further information please contact Rick on 07722 005905 or visit the website www.stoneshydrothermclinic.co.uk

MASSAGE AND REFLEXOLOGY

BARBARA PALLONI

I have been a holistic therapist since 2003.  I am fully qualified in Aromatherapy, Advanced Reflexology, Indian Head Massage, Crystal Therapy and Swedish Massage.  My qualifications (MAR, MICHT, ITEC) also include an Honours degree in Linguistics and a teaching certificate in further and adult education.

I am a member of the Association of Reflexologists (Aor) and of the Federation of Holistic therapists (FHT).  I work as a holistic/massage therapist with the charity organization Active LightWorks, which aims to raise public awareness of complementary therapies to communities and groups who cannot afford them, or are not aware of them.

I work for Lewes and Wealden District council as a mobile massage therapist to elderly people in their own homes.  I run a clinic in Lewes at the River Clinic on Wednesday afternoons.  I have my own private mobile practise offering complementary treatments throughout Sussex.

At present, I provide aromatherapy treatments to the staff, nurses and doctors at the hospital cancer department.  In addition, I am offering low cost massages to single mothers and unemployed people at the unemployment centre in Brighton with other therapists from Active LightWorks, together with providing holistic treatments to primary teachers as part of a research project.  The aim of the research project is to prove that holistic therapies improve teachers' performance at work and reduce absenteeism by relaxing and nourishing body, mind and spirit.

I believe that integrating complementary medicine alongside orthodox methods of diagnosis and treatment provides a more holistic approach to the prevention and cure of illness.  Stress is the cause for 75% of today’s diseases and it can be reduced by promoting complementary therapies among the public, together with a more balanced diet, exercise and relaxation techniques.

My timetable:
River clinic: Wednesdays 2-6pm

I can also provide holistic treatments at your home or place of work.

MINDFULNESS MEDITATION

TERESA GANE

Monday Meditation sessions
Do you ever feel you want to press pause for a minute? Come along and practice mindfulness meditation in a calm space and allow time for stillness. Drop-in sessions at River Clinic run from 6.15pm - 7.15pm every Monday. Payment is by donation. Please ring the bell outside to be let in and arrive at least 5 minutes before the practice begins.

About Teresa Gane
Teresa has been teaching insight meditation and mindfulness techniques to groups and on a one-to-one basis for three years. She completed the teacher training at the Centre for Mindfulness at Bangor University and attends retreats and groups on a regular basis.

Her particular interests are the application of mindfulness for compassion fatigue, and how incorporating mindfulness techniques in the workplace can help reduce stress and anxiety in our everyday working lives.

About Mindfulness Meditation
Mindfulness is defined by Jon Kabat-Zinn as “paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.” It is therefore a way of being able tap into, and sit with, whatever is most present for you at any given time. It involves compassionately moving towards our experience, in order to give us the best chance of opening up to it fully. Mindfulness approaches can help people deal with stress, anxiety, depression and pain more effectively.

For more information please email: teresagane@gmail.com or phone 07957 858583.
Alternatively, contact River Clinic on 01273 475735.

NUTRITIONAL THERAPY

TANYA BOROWSKI
Tanya Borowski

Welcome to Nutritional Values.

Overview
Stress, pollution, poor diet - the impact of everyday living can deplete the body of vital nutrients and disrupt its physiology, leading to chronic complaints such as IBS, digestive disturbances, PMS, weight gain, allergies, fatigue as well as more complex diseases such as diabetes & autoimmune conditions.

It is now also widely documented by The World Health Organization that our current diet & lifestyle habits are the leading cause of the chronic disease epidemic we face. Heart disease, type 2 diabetes, elevated BP, metabolic syndrome, overweight & obesity, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis have never been more prevalent and all have poor nutrition as a significant component.

Based at River Clinic in Lewes, Nutritional Values helps to restore equilibrium through addressing nutrient deficiencies or system imbalances through the application of nutritional science.

My Approach
My approach to Nutritional Therapy comes from application of the functional medicine model which focuses on identifying and addressing nutritional and system imbalances that underpin chronic disease and health concerns. Treatment is dynamic, addressing the root cause of health complaints not just an isolated set of symptoms. Time is spent understanding the patient’s medical & genetic history, dietary patterns, and assessing environmental factors that may have influenced their long-term health. I use a combination of a detailed case history, in-clinic body composition testing using cutting edge reporting technology and on occasion functional laboratory tests e.g. blood, urine, stool) are recommended to pinpoint underlying dysfunction such as hormone profiles, IBS screen, or an inflammatory gut marker test. All combined this allows me to provide the most targeted and factual nutritional advice for each individual client.

About Tanya
Following a successful career in the travel industry I decided to follow a long standing passion and retrain as a nutritional therapist. Starting my training in Sydney I then returned to the UK and completed a three year diploma in nutritional therapy with the College of Naturopathic Medicine London. As a member of BANT & The Functional Institute of Medicine my approach combines evidence & insight, into an individualized, patient-centred treatment plan.I am often consulted about how to lose weight, gain more energy and have a specialist interest in nutritional solutions for digestive complaints such as candida, parasite overgrowth or IBS having gained a wealth of experience working for Biological Testing Services (BTS), the UK representative for the leading German microbiological Dr Hauss Laboratory. As a mum of a six year old I particularly welcome consultations with children and parents to help with strengthening immunity manage behavioural issues or simply just ensuring good foundations of health are established at a young age.

Please feel free to call me for a free initial 10-15 minute chat about your health concern & discuss my approach, or visit my website at www.nutritionalvalues.co.uk
